چکیده

Intercalation products based on ionic exchange reaction between cationic dye methylene blue and Na-montmorillonite were prepared. Montmorillonite particles intercalated with methylene blue were characterized using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The results showed that intercalation of dye molecules within the interlayer spaces of montmorillonite has successfully occurred and a degree of layers coverage equal to 81 % of cationic exchange capacity was achieved. The obtained coverage results in an increase of 5.8 Å in the basal spacing of silicate layers compared to pure montmorillonite. XRD results also indicated that the intercalation process was only dependant on intercalant concentration. Other factors such as time of the process and clay concentration had no effect on the obtained basal spacing. Thermo-gravimetric analysis suggested improved thermal stability of the intercalated dye.

Methylene Blue Absorption by Clay Minerals. Determination of Surface Areas and Cation Exchange Capacities (clay-organic Studies Xviii)

Under appropriate conditions, both surface areas and cation exchange capacities of clay minerals can be measured by absorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The method has been applied to two kaolinites, one illite, and one montmorillonite, all initially saturated with Na + ions. For Na-montmorillonite, the total area, internal plus external, is measured. For Ca-montmorillonite, ent...

Modes of tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrinatomanganese(III) ion intercalation inside natural clays

BACKGROUND Metalloporphyrin ions, with planar shape, have been known to intercalate horizontally and diagonally between montmorillonite layers. Perpendicular intercalation inside montmorillonite has not been reported earlier. This work aims at achieving perpendicular intercalation inside montmorillonite in natural clays. Possible intercalation inside other forms of natural clay will also be inv...

Removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using modified clay

Introduction: Discharging of industrial colored wastewaters especially into aqueous environments can cause adverse effects on aquatic life due to their toxic natures. In this study, montmorillonite modified by hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA-Mt) was used for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Materials and Methods: The influence of surfactant loading rate, contact time, pH, adso...

Montmorillonite as Efficient Nanoclay for Removal of Aniline Blue Dye: Optimization, Isotherm and Kinetic Study

In this study, montmorillonite clay was used as the adsorbent for the removal of Aniline Blue dye, from aqueous solution by the batch adsorption technique under different conditions. The maximum removal of aniline blue dye for initial dye concentration 20 mg/L was more than 95% at optimum conditions (pH=4.5, contact time=30 min, and adsorbent dosage=2 g/L). The data of this study were fitted wi...
